Microtonal/xenharmonic music typically involves re-fretting guitars with unusual spacings, reprogramming synths to output different frequencies, or even building whole instruments from scratch! As these techniques are difficult, the music is rare to find.

split-notes’ goal is to help listeners discover xen music – music that uses new and unusual intonations. Perhaps you make this sort of music and would like to collaborate by releasing your music under our label.

The music on split-notes must satisfy 2 criteria:

  1. The music is microtonal/xenharmonic.
  2. The music is groove-based (has a beat).

Further info

  • We don’t release physical records – just digital only. See netlabel.
  • We release free or pay-what-you-like music. Usually (but not necessarily) music on split-notes has been released under one of various Creative Commons licenses.

Submitting your demo

Contact Sean via the contact form below. Please explain what you do and attach/link some recordings. We get excited for tasty jams with an interesting and polished sound. And of course, keeping it very very xen. :-)

Note: If you don’t get a response back in a couple weeks then your message may have fallen through the cracks. This is a tiny label run by one guy. Wait a little while then try again!
